What’s [on] my [mac]?

For most people the apps and technologies they use to develop is as unique as a thumb print. Here’s mine.

April 12, 2013

The first step in the design process to do research on the subject of the design. The more understanding we have on the subject matter the better fit the design will be. This can include:

  • Market Research
  • Interviews
  • Analytics
  • Best Practices
  • Usability Testing

By using a variety of tools in gaining understanding of what the design needs to achieve we have a more well rounded grasp of what the final design needs to be.

Once we have established a thorough understanding of the subject matter the next step is to develop underlying strategies. Depending on the scale and scope of the project these strategies can include:

  • Information Architecture
  • Messaging
  • Technology Platforms
  • Identity & Branding Approaches
  • Market Positioning

A huge range of different strategies are developed to ensure that the backbone behind the visual design is consistent.

The next step of the design process is to execute the design. Based on the research and the strategies the actual implementation is developed. This includes:

  • Wireframes
  • Stylistic Directions
  • Print & Branding Collateral
  • Programming

This is not the final step in the design process because at this point the process begin again. Based on research from End User Testing and as well as analytics from the actual implemented design we can then make further adjustments. Researching how to better hone the final product so that it is on point.

About Me

With a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design from the Prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, I developed and honed his skills under the tutelage of Leah Hofmitz, Clane Graves, Nils Lindstrom and Doyald Young. After college I worked as a freelancer, as an associate with several designer firms in Los Angeles and eventually moved to Northern California. I have continued my both my freelance work, run my own studio and worked as a designer for a Sacramento based web agency. I had the good fortune to find Adrian during a challenging hiring process. I wanted someone who could serve as both a designer and a front-end developer, and it is difficult to find someone who can do both well. Though I was initially a little concerned about the fact that Adrian would be working remotely, I found that I need not worry.

Adrian was able to ramp up very quickly on our development environment, and soon found himself working on a cross-functional team developing an entirely new product. He led the design process, creating a modern-looking design using cutting-edge web technologies for our new product. These designs were very well received both across the company and with customers.

Adrian has shown that he is comfortable working with a variety of stakeholders, including UX designers, product managers, and developers. I personally found him to be receptive to critiques of his designs and enjoyable to work with. He is self-driven and does not require large amounts of oversight. Adrian is driven to do top quality work to brings out the best in the products for which he designs, and this quality is apparent in both design comps and his HTML/CSS/JavaScript code. I would recommend him to anyone looking for such a difficult-to-find combination in a single person.
I had the pleasure of pairing with Adrian on several projects. We collaborated on redesigning existing products, as well as designing a completely new product. Adrian designed exceptional UI's, and gave our team several "Styletiles" to choose from. He was incredibly skilled with efficiently creating multiple designs for our team to choose from, while not sacrificing quality on any one. Adrian's designs are beautifully balanced, unique, minimal, and meticulously crafted. Adrian consistently impressed me by these talents while efficiently and rapidly delivering. He worked well with myself along with several other designers, knowing just how to balance the aesthetics of design with the usability of an interface. He also had an impressive proficiency with frontend development, fully seeing his own designs through. He was skilled with all the best and current technologies and libraries, which greatly helped our team to deliver projects on incredibly tight deadlines. I am looking forward to working with Adrian again, and any team or company would be fortunate to have him.
Adrian is a very talented developer with a high bar for quality, design aesthetics and great user experience. He built out new product interfaces that wowed all users and RightScale customers. As a Product Manager I learned allot of valuable UX knowledge from Adrian as well.
He's a top tier UX developer that I would work again in an instant.
